Griffin Theatre

Griffin Theatre Company was founded in 1979 and in 1980 the building at 10 Nimrod Street Darlinghurst became the SBW Stables Theatre. The Griffin Theatre Company is exclusively devoted to new Australian plays. It has been the launch pad for actors including Cate Blanchett and Jaqueline MacKenzie. It has premiered productions of National acclaim including Prima Facie and City of Gold.

The project is being funded by individual and corporate donors, CreateNSW, the Council of the City of Sydney and the Commonwealth through the Thriving Suburbs programme.

The Griffin Theatre Company retained Touchstone Partners to develop the project from DA to completion. Touchstone Partners managed an ECI process to allow the project to be delivered to budget.

The new Griffin Theatre is located a 200m2 site, triangular in plan. The development includes a state-of-the-art 140 seat theatre (up from 100 seats) including the famous kite shaped stage and acoustics to facilitate un-amplified productions. The ground floor is the lobby, performance space and amenities. The new building features a basement rehearsal space that mirrors the first floor production space, including the kite shaped stage.

Designed by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, the new theatre provides a revitalised performance space in the heart of Sydney while still respecting its relationship with the adjacent residential precinct.
